The first round of funding from the Thermal Explorer Regional Events Fund has been confirmed

$3.75m was allocated to the Thermal Explorer Regional Events fund as part of the $50 million regional events fund announced by the NZ Government in September 2020 as a result of COVID-19.

The Thermal Explorer Regional Events Fund incorporates the Waikato, Rotorua, Taupō and Ruapehu areas and the selection panel includes eight delegates from the four districts

There were 82 expressions of interest to hold events in the following areas

  • 28 Waikato events
  • 19 Rotorua events
  • 12 Taupō events
  • 7 Ruapehu events
  • 16 events facilitated across more than one of the Thermal Explorer districts

Of the 82 applicants, 22 were shortlised to present to the panel of which 15 events were offered funding from the Thermal Explorer Regional Events Fund.

  • New Zealand Rugby League National Tournaments (Rotorua)
  • Ohakune Events Charitable Trust (Ruapehu)
  • SX4 (Taupō)
  • The Great Kiwi Summer Expo (Waikato)
  • Tom Campbell Big Air (Ruapehu)
  • Tourism Summit Aotearoa and Tourism Awards Dinner (Waikato)
  • Whaka 100 (Rotorua)
